The use of Proxcelan™ (Cesium-131) brachytherapy seeds, including recommendations and treatment guidelines for physicians in treating prostate cancer, are highlighted in the November issue of Brachytherapy. The article represents the first full clinical manuscript devoted to the use of Proxcelan seeds to be accepted by a peer-reviewed journal.

In addition to treatment guidelines developed by the Cesium Advisory Group (CAG), the report also provides a comprehensive overview of the key differences between Proxcelan seeds and Iodine-125, another commonly-used medical isotope used in brachytherapy seed treatment for prostate cancer.
The guidelines—focusing on the treatment of low, intermediate and high risk prostate cancer--are based on the combined experience of more than 1,200 Proxcelan implants conducted by the most experienced Proxcelan implanters in the United States. The report is based on three clinical trials and provides technical recommendations covering all aspects of permanent seed brachytherapy--from pre-planning to patient release criteria.
Many of the authors have published previously on Proxcelan’s ability to provide patients a shorter duration of commonly expected toxicities, good tumor control and possibly even a faster PSA response time than other isotopes.”
Since its introduction in October 2004, over 3,200 patients have been have been treated for prostate cancer using Cesium-131. Many report a rapid return to a normal quality of life within days of their treatment.
